The First Step – Understand Your Body Type

Overall Tips:

  • CREATE A WAIST.                
  • When in doubt, a wrap dress is always flattering.
  • Monochromatic looks are always a good way to go.

PearTriangle/Pear:

Traits: Your lower body is wider than your upper body, your bottom is well rounded and your waist is well-defined.

Assets: Shoulders and torso.Goals: Emphasize your waist and arms.

Do’s:

  • A-line dresses/skirts which camouflage wider hips.
  • Belted dresses or tops that have a defined waistline.
  • Most pants! Wide trousers, straight leg or skinny will work. Look for stretch in the fabric.

Don’ts:

  • Shapeless, oversize tops.
  • Prints on bottom that draw attention to hips.

 

appleCircle/Apple:

Traits: Most of your weight accumulates above the hips, which are narrow. Your back, ribs and shoulders are broad.

Asset: Your legs! Goals: Elongate torso, show off your legs, and create a waist.

Do’s:

  • Straight or skinny trousers work. Can also go for a wider leg to balance out top half.
  • Wear belts at the smallest part of your waist.
  • Look for V-neck necklines to elongate torso.
  • Add a structured blazer over a loose fitting top to hide tummy but create a waist.
  • Look for pants/skirts that hit at the belly button (no higher) to account for a larger bust.
  • Shift Dresses.

Don’ts:

  • High-rise trousers.
  • High necklines.

Traits: Your shoulders and hips are similar in proportion and set off by a tiny waist.

Assets: Curves!

Goals: Show off your curves without going overboard.

Do’s:

  • Wear dresses/skirts that nip in at the waist.
  • Pencil skirts.
  • Do belt at the waist.
  • Wear high-waist skirts to show off your hips.
  • Skinny or straight leg jeans work well.
  • Choose clothes that work with your natural curves.

Don’ts:

  • Shapeless/boxy styles.

Traits: Your waist, hip and shoulder widths are similar. Straight up-and-down figure.

Assets: Arms and legs. Don’t have to worry about minimizing any features.

Goals: Create curves!

Do’s:

  • Look for sweetheart necklines to create curves.
  • Look for tops with ruffles or any details to flatter the chest.
  • Styles that fit snugly around the middle but flare out at the bottom.
  • Tailored blazers that nip in at the waist.

Don’ts:

  • Anything too flowy or unstructured around the waist.
