The Resurgence of Connection
Wow! What an amazing month I just experienced! My experiment in prolonging Hedonic Adaptation has been a success! But then again, experiments, by definition, cannot fail. Even failure brings learning and with it, wisdom.
My jubilant success was anchored into last month’s DRIVEN blog article. I suggested three ways to avoid diluting the impact of life’s extraordinary moments. I must confess, I’ve been hooked on the first suggestion over these last 30 days, perpetuating my state of awe! And funny enough, it’s not the BIG events that have inspired this amazement; it’s the small things, like leaving the camera in my pocket while enjoying the scenes from my kayak, and mindfully letting my daily view of our beautiful local mountain take my breath away each time.
I also continue to contemplate aligning my values with my actions. This is a sneaky way of being thoughtful about my boundaries. So, I invite you, as you adapt to a hybrid state of "living", to consider how to negotiate for what you don’t want to forgo during your home-work experience (Hint: It’s not only the boss you will be negotiating with.)
Looking forward, as we do begin to interact with colleagues and family differently, August’s DRIVEN blog article will empower you to reconnect with others in a different way. None of us are the same people we were 18 months ago. We need to reacquaint with each other by creating the space to really “be” with others. This, in fact, can be as holistically nourishing as eating a massaged kale salad with hard boiled eggs. It doesn’t sound exciting, but you can survive on it!
This resurgence of connection is coming at an ideal time, as sentiments of Languishing continue to bubble up from all corners of my network, and in different ways for different clients. There is strong evidence that we humans are resilient, and with this realization comes the opportunity to CHOOSE to flourish instead of languishing or worrying.
What will YOU choose in this pivotal moment?
Cheers!
-Deborah Goldstein
