The Words That Fulfill Us

Here’s something fun and unusual that you must have experienced. I call it an extended “moment of synchronicity” that keeps you thinking. Like when my spouse Michael brought home a new car last year in a distinctive and striking blue. I had NEVER seen a car this color before, but lo and behold, I saw 2 or 3 others by the end of the week! And then there are those times when you learn a new word, and all of a sudden you encounter that word being used in a newspaper article and on a podcast that same day. Sound familiar?

Well, it turns out that DRIVEN’s 2020 Word of the Year, “Clarity”, arrived and quickly permeated our collective synchroneity of experience in much the same way as described above. Finding actual Clarity during a year of fear, illness, loss, frustration and exhaustion happens to be one tall order! For many, it was grounding and sanity-saving to gain Clarity about what was stewing in our brains during such a time of crisis and uncertainty, proving to be a gateway to recognizing how fogged each of us was, and why. I’m prouder of that word today than I was when I chose it a year ago, as it has kept me and so many in DRIVEN’s business community focused, paced and healthy through it all.

Looking forward, there will be a new Word of the Year throughout 2021, and if you haven’t yet received the news, that word has been officially announced as of this morning! It’s a word that I’ve been sharing space with since my teenage years, as part of my high school newspaper editing team. In the decades since, valuable permutations of this word have been surfacing in my life and career at every turn. Today, its impact serves a vital function in my coaching toolbox and has informed the courageous conversations that lead to inclusion and diversity for my clients. It may appear that I’m dancing around this word to build suspense, but believe it or not, the word has been sneakily inserted into this very paragraph! Take a guess, and then link to DRIVEN’s blog page for the unveiling. I can hardly wait for your feedback. Happy 2021!

Cheers!
-Deborah Goldstein

Tell Me How The Story Ends

Author Ann Patchett recently wrote a long, delicious and inspiring account of how she serendipitously met and subsequently housed Sooki Raphael— visual artist and Tom Hanks’ personal assistant. This true story brings us from pre-COVID times to the present, and in the final sentence answers the question the title asks. Invest an hour in reading the Harper’s Magazine article HERE. You’ll be glad you did.

Deborah’s Radio Debut

In case you missed it in last week’s e-blast, Deborah Goldstein finally did something fun and exciting that she had been putting off for too long: She phoned in live to a public radio broadcast hosted by Brian Lehrer to comment! But that’s not even the most interesting part. Just before her call was patched through, there was a twist, and she had to find the confidence to change most of what she’d planned to say, on-the-fly. Link HERE to listen to her brief on-air phone call, and HERE to discover how she used the advice that she, herself, offers as a coach to make her moment hit the mark.
