Insights & Inspiration

Hi There,

I’ve been experiencing neuroplasticity in action over the past few weeks. You see, I won a grant to take part in a 6-week course in Positive Intelligence (PQ). The premise is simple: Retrain my neuropathways to take different, psychologically healthful routes as I experience life. The mission is to redirect my brain’s default neuropathways away from judgment— of myself, others and situations. This in turn will allow me to understand more clearly, respond more compassionately, and manage my daily life more effectively. Thanks to the challenges in this coursework, I’ve become hyperaware of how I’m judging every aspect of life, perpetually.

Of course, a simple premise doesn’t mean it’s easy to implement! And I’m finding that the most difficult part of the PQ process is catching myself in the act of being judge-y. But there’s some good news: The antidote to this “gotcha” situation is practicing mindfulness. So, as you might imagine, I’ve been engaging in actively building my mindfulness muscle. And it’s been quite the trip.

Why am I sharing all of this? Well, because PQ aligns ideally with the concept of self-management. And right about now, as many of us are rocking in a cradle of uncertainty about our future and are still grieving about what our "past normal" used to be, our emotions are managing us (instead of the other way around). Mindfulness is one of many solutions, letting us be present and respond (not react) to the realities of now.

Here’s my favorite act of mindfulness: Before most phone calls, Zoom sessions or “heavy lifting work”, I do a 3-breath meditation. It serves to bring me right to the present. And this allows me to better manage my emotions and my energy. Do try this at home, and see where it takes you! Then, drop me a line and let me know.

Cheers!
-Deborah
