Utilizing the Virtues of Confidence
Does the passage of time play tricks with your head? It sometimes seems surreal to me. I’ve been back from the European C-IQ Collective Retreat for long enough that the euphoria has begun to fade. And yet, the credit card payment for purchases made abroad isn’t due for another week.
The good news is that the lessons learned with my colleagues will be applicable forever more. If you missed any of these, in June’s DRIVEN blog post I wrote about the retreat in general, as a template you can adopt for a rich and engaging event of your own. And if you receive DRIVEN’s weekly distribution message, you’ve been invited to marinate on and experiment with the concepts of Thought Disruption, leveraging reflection as a strategic tool for growth, and reframing A.I. from being a potential threat to being a future benefit.
I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed the June pre-summit events through Coach.com. Gleaning insight into what leaders in the coaching, consulting, and facilitation industry, like Marcus Buckingham, Marcia Reynolds, and Francesca Gino are working on, is thought-provoking and at times, highly inspirational.
On the work front, “leaning on” was the remarkable takeaway from the financial services partner responsible for my Executive Presence workshops. At the close of the kick-off event, he commented about appreciating my framing of “Confidence”.
I started with the baseline definition, “Confidence is a belief in one’s ability to succeed – a belief that stimulates action.” Besides recognizing that this ‘formula’ creates a self-fulfilling cycle, participants were invited to further widen their perspectives and consider their resources. In this case, besides their own brilliance, hard work, long hours, and serious efforts, they are ensconced in a team that has like-minded goals and drive.
I applied the ‘resources’ lesson last week when I called on a cherished network colleague and friend for advice. You see, the consistent cadence for DRIVEN’s monthly newsletter is the first Tuesday of the month's release date (which fell on the big holiday this year). After weighing the benefits and the detriments of keeping with tradition, Cheryl Benton, marketing expert and head Tomato of the 3T armed me with the confidence behind today’s July 5th release decision.
Looking forward, I am in creative mode as I craft a workshop series for a client supporting their employees during a time of heightened uncertainty. After all, if there’s one thing we can count on, it’s uncertainty. And it’s liberating to recognize that we can better manage ambiguity with a few key tools to gain perspective and recognize how during times of doubt, our own brains lie to us (to protect us – really!)
What IS certain is that the month of July will be replete with gardening activities, as I learn about discouraging wildlife, large and small, from downright devouring our pretty posies and awe-inspiring blooms.
How about you? What will you be delighting in during July?
Cheers!
Deborah Goldstein
The Key to Fulfillment!
Everyone has the capability to increase our battery capacity. Unlike with a smartphone battery, we are able to build and sustain our personal resilience, even when we’re on the run. You see, each of us has four energy sources that directly affect the duration and vitality of our charge, as well as how much strain we can bear. Once we understand what fills and depletes each energy tank, we can intentionally top off our tanks. Get a detailed look at these 4 energy tanks by reading the latest article in a series by Deborah Goldstein and Ute Franzen-Waschke on The Three Tomatoes. Your reward will be greater clarity, focus and fulfillment!
Capture the Joy!
In this delightful episode of We Can Do Hard Things, Glennon, Amanda and Abby interview poet Ross Gay about the power of delight. Ross inspires us to notice delight and joy in our everyday lives, which is essential during a time of overwhelm and uncertainty. The podcast also discusses concrete ways to rediscover and capture joy every day, while also teaching us how to rebuild our “delight muscle” and dissolve the myth of disconnection between us. After listening, you may even consider forming your own Delight Circle of check-in buddies with which to share daily delights.
Bringing Down the Numbers.
Did you know that the second leading cause of death among Americans between ages 10 and 24 is suicide? Female high school students demonstrated an increase in prevalence of seriously considering suicide (from 24.1% to 30%), an increase in making a suicide plan (from 19.9% to 23.6%), and an increase in suicide attempts (from 11.0% to 13.3%) between 2019 and 2021, according to a CDC study. In June, Dr. Mark Rapaport, CEO of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) shared what his organization is doing to mitigate these numbers with the participants of Donors’ Forum. You can learn why HMHI has become a national model for mental health education, research, treatment, and care by watching the video of this Donors’ Forum session.
