In Pursuit of Justice For All
Hi There,
A younger me was embarrassed to admit that I had paid little notice to Black History Month. Well, columnist Kai Wright confessed to a similar attitude on his narrative NPR broadcast The United States of Anxiety. And coming from a black American who hosts a radio show about racial justice, Kai’s sentiment was as daring and unexpected as it was revealing.
I should mention that I feel a certain kinship with Kai, following a comment on racial inequity I was able to get his feedback on during a call-in radio special. It was my very first on-air phone call and was a big deal for me. Not only was I putting voice to a pledge I had made, but the recording was being collected and placed into a “time capsule” to be unearthed in ten years as a look back at our current racial predicament. How exciting to publicly be an advocate and ally for racial justice in this setting!
It was only after my radio debut that I heard Kai’s revelation of previously not being “into” Black History Month. But 2021 is different for both of us. This month, DRIVEN’s website is home to an additional blog page “lagniappe” featuring some outstanding resources to celebrate BHM, and we’ll continue to add resource media over the next three weeks. Kai Wright is represented on that page as a contributing author to Ibram X. Kendi’s new book Four Hundred Souls.
I invite you and anyone in your network who’s curious about contributing to Racial Justice and workplaces of psychological safety to explore different aspects of the joy, pain, challenges and aspirations Black Americans have embodied historically and still face today. Let’s discover the solutions we can all adopt to achieve inclusion, equity and diversity in our organizations. We humans are 99.9% genetically identical; Why wouldn’t we strive for justice for all?
Feel free to reply to this email and tell me what stood out to you among our resources. What would you like to see more of?
Cheers!
-Deborah
