Recovery from Stress is a Decision.

Hi There,

Throughout the month of May, DRIVEN looked at how to better manage stress from different perspectives. After all, stressful situations have been on the rise in tandem with inflation, political divisiveness, international tensions, and environmental concerns. Consider these statistics:

Most notably, we investigated the way we impose stress upon ourselves, under the spell of societal expectations. We went further to recognize that we don’t even give ourselves the respect and the grace to implement self-care, which is a necessary stabilizer of stress.

I am curious if you’ve tried any of the solutions offered to mitigate the stress you’re managing. Or did you talk yourself out of experimenting with these stress management suggestions, concluding that nothing would be effective in your situation?

The responses to these questions would dictate to me how your recovery from stress is going. Henry Ford put it most succinctly when he said, “If you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right”. You see, stress isn’t like cancer. When you suffer from stress, recovery is substantially in your own hands! But the first step is up to you.

And if you’re not willing to invest in mitigating stress, instead accepting that you are helpless in changing your ways, you are lying to yourself. Further still, you may be addicted to stress. Julia Cameron writes about this addiction poignantly in The Artist’s Way:

“Most…have an active addiction to anxiety. We prefer the low-grade pain and occasional heart-stopping panic attack to the drudgery of small and simple daily steps in the right direction.”

This makes incredible sense! And it inspires me to realize why I LOVE my habits and practices. After a quarter-century of debilitating panic attacks, I’m happy to embrace the daily steps to ensure I never experience one again.

So, allow me to tempt you in this way: Are you willing to try one of our solutions offered to mitigate the stress you’re managing? Are you ready to take a stab at a self-care practice? Speaking from experience, the effort is absolutely worth it!

Cheers!
-Deborah
