As Society Reopens, Show Up With Presence & Gratitude!
Last month I continued DRIVEN’s exploration into being an ally in the workplace. Do You “Stand Under” the Realities of Others? demonstrates the huge importance of creating a 21st century workplace of psychological safety. In furthering my efforts as a JEDI crusader, I’ve recognized that before I was able to play “all in”, I had to look within, specifically to acknowledge my privilege in this world. For some, the word “privilege” is a trigger. For me, it’s been reframed as gratitude for all the good fortune that has been bestowed upon me, with the optimism that I can be a conduit for spreading it to others.
Considering the multitude of responses to my June message about reframing privilege to gratitude, I began a gratitude rave. I encouraged you to reach out to someone who has had a positive impact on your life and let them know it! This is the formula for a gratitude twofer (since you benefit from the oxytocin and endorphins just like the person you reach out to.) I then shared one of my favorite gratitude hacks: giving myself a mental “cheer” simply for getting to the starting line of an event. Finally, I shared my experience of journeying to NYC for the first time in 16 months, and how I surfed the emotional extremes attached to this seemingly ordinary event.
Then, just this morning, I published a DRIVEN blog article that lays out how I intend to move forward during this interesting inflection point in modern history. I’m committed to resisting hedonic adaptation and showing up with presence and gratitude as society continues to “open up” after a grueling 16 months.
To further explore this reopening, I invite you to read a series of informative Forbes.com articles that my writing partner Ute Franzen-Waschke and I have developed over the past year, related to better communication and co-creation with work teams. Some of the highlights include a deeper look into what co-creation truly is, how to create and inspire trust on your team, and how to respond when teammates put up resistance.
I am motivated to look further into prolonging the joys of daily life instead of getting sucked into the “before times” and ways of working that didn’t serve then or now. Look for my weekly insights and inspirations in these departments throughout July. I also invite you to share what’s inspiring you this summer.
Cheers!
