The Most Rewarding Journey.
Hi There,
Did you know that October is Emotional Intelligence Awareness Month?!? When I learned this, I had a mixed reaction. First, I thought, “Yay!”. People becoming alerted to EQ is incredibly important, for the individual and for anyone with whom they interact. But my “Yay” quickly turned to “Yikes!”. You see, Emotional Intelligence is an essential ingredient for a life well-lived. Keeping EQ at top of mind makes it more feasible to build healthy and trusting connections with friends, family and colleagues. It would seem that EQ awareness could use more than one month!
And yet, many of us are short on EQ. This is not due to lack of desire, but lack of direction. We can read about EQ all day, but employing the tenets in real time is another story.
Why is this the case?
I’m so glad you asked! It’s because the first two tenets of EQ (Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation) imply that you are present in the moment to be aware and to regulate. And yet, we as humans are typically living in the past and the future— not so much in the present.
But don’t be discouraged! Not only do I have a lens to magnify your awareness of EQ, I have the means to bring you to greater Emotional Intelligence. It’s called Conversational Intelligence®. C-IQ is what brings EQ to life. It provides the vehicle to put the theory of EQ into practice— through words! After all, Words Create Worlds. And when you understand the neuroscience of conversations, you can better use your words to create connection and trust, at work and in life.
What’s the first step toward better EQ via C-IQ? In my estimation, it is to recognize, accept and then work to mitigate our #1 blind spot: Believing that everyone sees the world as YOU do. Once we fully digest the fact that each of us is the movie star of our own life and sees the world quite differently due to our own personal terroir, we create space for presence. In this space we get to choose curiosity and appreciation of others’ points of view. And with these tools, you’re able to show empathy toward and manage your relationship with others.
What a coincidence! These are the other tenets of EQ!
Now that you’ve become aware of EQ, what will you do this month to employ EQ?
Cheers!
