A Matter of Mindfulness.

Hi There,

I had the most delightful date this morning. My companion was the rising sun. On this brisk autumn day, the first frost still clinging to each blade of grass, I went outside and did nothing extraordinary.

And yet, my everyday duties grew into an adventure as I became captivated by the tiniest details. I intentionally slowed down to absorb the wonderment presented to my senses.

The synchronicity of this act didn’t escape me, as I’d prepared for a meeting with my Dharma discussion group for this evening. I’d just come across a sentence in Yoga and the Quest for the True Self that struck me as true. And here I was, living this truth.

The passage I’d stumbled upon only the night before was, “But the magic is this: if we look deeply into the face of all created things, we will find God.” Wow! Mindfulness as a religious experience!

So, I became fully present as I noticed the morning light, the color of the path to eternity pouring across the wooden floor. I gaze out of the southeast-facing windows, humbled by the stunning beauty of this innocent light. It streams over the begonia, frosting the flowered tips with columned rays of warmth. There’s movement in the room, courtesy of a reflection on a picture of ocean waves— my own private light show.

I giggle as I listen to some families of birds. They’re squawking in glee as I emerge with the birdfeeder. Nothing exotic, just a cluster of chickadees, a gregarious group of tufted titmice, and some nimble nuthatches, all preparing to visit our familiar feeders and add some delight to my day.

My heart is bursting right now with the gift of mindfully noticing the details. What felt like a whole day of luxury, in reality, was actually only a 10-minute affair.

Why do I share this? As an invitation to you to find meaning, satisfaction and even beauty in your everyday activities. We have the opportunity to welcome small wonders throughout our days.

What can you add to your day to help appreciate your good fortune?

Cheers!
-Deborah
