Whose Emotions Are You Exposed To?

Hi There,

Do you consider yourself a collector? Collections run the spectrum of interests from coins to comic books to shoes. I’ve even read about a woman who collects dust bunnies! And just last week, I realized that I collect people.

That’s right! During the first meeting of a newly formed mastermind, I recognized that I’ve successfully assembled an impressive collection of amazing people in my life.

Ironically, the mastermind grew out of a virtual Kripalu course I took to “find my dharma”. Why is this ironic? Because one of my mottos has always been, “I surround myself with people I aspire to be like.” Looks like I’m already living part of my dharma.

So, I’m curious: What kind of people do you surround yourself with? Take a minute and bring to mind the people in your life. You may even want to make a list. Now tune in and ask yourself how you feel when you’re thinking of these folks.

These two questions are crucial to consider for your sustained health and well-being. In a time when people are feeling stressed, lonely and overwhelmed, it’s important to scrutinize the impact of others on your emotional equilibrium. And that starts with recognizing whose emotions you’re exposed to.

Once you’ve identified these folks, consider that “you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. Now ask yourself how that statement makes you feel while looking at your list. Do these folks “Light you up” or “close you down”?

Are you psyched about your short list? If not, don’t agonize.

We get to choose to spend more time with people who light us up. Now of course, we must tolerate certain people in our lives. But we can counter these drains.

The question now becomes: With whom you want to choose to spend more time? As an experiment, jot down a quick list of these people.

Now ask yourself, “How can I intentionally plant these folks into my life more often?” Executing a couple of ideas to insert positive people into your life will serve to fill your emotional AND spiritual energy tanks.

As winter draws closer and activities move indoors, consider this an ideal time to intentionally think about how to forge connection, inspire personal growth, and make space for joy in your life.

Here are some effective first steps:

1. Embrace the growth mindset.
2. Start a Gratitude Practice.
3. Surround yourself with positive people and nourish your soul by adopting their attitudes.

I promise this prescription is over-the-counter and absolutely safe!

Cheers!
